BA(Hons) photographyIn this image-saturated world where photographs proliferate it is imperative that photographers offer more than a moment captured. The photographers in this exhibition are curious and critically intelligent, they articulate a language that enables insight, understanding and the possibility of thinking anew. We need the eyes and minds of these image-makers as they will be the ones to make sense of our world. At this point in human history, these photographers are uniquely qualified for this task.
The photographers presenting their work here respond to our changing world with a perceptive eye, always critically engaged with the human condition. The images we are offered range across a landscape of human experience: from a close analysis of the lived environment to a critical questioning of the Anthropocene; from introspective enquiry to the expansive possibility of dream. The last 12 months lockdown has affected, the publics mental health and well-being but also the ability to access sports and gym facilities. This will be a retrospective (March 2020 – March 2021) looking on the temporary closer of these spaces, making them buildings ‘redundant’ in nature. This series develops on a dystopian-like landscape as the structures that were once flourishing in society, are now disused. By losing the aptitude to access these activity-based spaces/ venues and their physical benefit toward society, they also lose their intrinsic importance of delivering essential support within educational, tackling health risks and encouraging community interrelations. |

Website My interests in photography are varied, and this is reflected in my work; this small selection of portraiture, landscape and documentary photographs from the last three years are from separate series shot for both personal and university projects, exploring themes such as environmentalism, history, autobiography, urban decay, and human impact within the landscape. |

Website During the covid 19 pandemic, the home has become an all too familiar environment. A home is traditionally a place of comforting familiarity, but now this familiarity is a source of disappointment, instead the domestic space has become our de facto environment during the various guises of lockdown. Here I found myself in unfamiliar territory, the distant landscape was seemingly out of reach brought on by the message ‘stay at home’. The domestic environment became my new landscape, a landscape that is safe yet frustratingly familiar, yet I found myself willingly occupied capturing this familiarity. |
Lena Crowe
Website I am Lena Crowe, a documentary and portrait photographer based in west Cumbria. Here you can see a selection of my portraits, artistic works and street photography which I have developed over the last three years. I have a burning passion for documentary approaches and my fascination for history and culture has led me to naturally document as much as possible before it is instantly changed by time. Here we see those (often drastic) changes in the many images I have produced while studying with the University of Cumbria. |

Website Vimeo These videos form part of a developing practice which uses accessible moving-image to explore and encourage a decoy visual-language of ambiguity. The improvisational and immediate qualities of these digital expressions allow for consideration of the broader implications of their possibility – and a subsequent existence as viewable products. Embedded within is a utopic desire to navigate the possibilities of digital communication whilst prizing the personal and communal lived experience. |
