(people) ‘make their own histories but not in the conditions of their choosing’ (Marx)
Celebrating the work of students graduating from the University of Cumbria Institute of Arts BA (Hons) Fine Art Programme, this multidisciplinary exhibition offers a timely overview of modern Britain. Manifest in a wildly diverse range of the grotesque, the bogus, the absurd and the fetishistic, these multi-faceted objects offer new perspectives, not simply on the art of today, but on the reified condition of late-capitalist society. As such, this critically conscious exhibition challenges the received orthodoxy of ruling class ways of seeing, knowing and telling. |

Jonathan Cunningham
Jonathan Cunningham’s work showcases a collection of work produced during the undergraduate degree from 2020 to 2023. It explores perceptions of value in the everyday context and how our understanding and appreciation of beauty can be shifted.Cunningham’s creations have been inspired by the environment in which he lives and our climate. The Arte Povera and Eco Art movements have been at the forefront of the work as well as artists such as Annie Farrer, Lei Xue and Wang Zhiyuan. Vital materialism and Plant Blindness can also be fed into the work. Overall, the work helps to bring nature back into a modern society. The key to this exhibition is ‘creative conversation’, an environment in which to reflect and respond. According to the young Climate Activist Xiuhtezcatl Martinez, “The biggest challenge is shifting human consciousness. The planet doesn’t need saving, we do”. During All Our Land, one participant stated that “how can we care if we aren’t aware”. All Our Land was a set of workshops and an exhibition joint funded by Natural England and the Yorkshire Wildlife Trust (YWT), as part of the Wild Ingleborough Initiative. |
